Benzyl Alcohol Definition: It is derived from a pure alcohol, a colorless liquid with a mild pleasant faint sweet aromatic odor. It is a constituent of a variety of essential oils including jasmine, hyacinth, ylang-ylang, and other plants. It is often used as a preservative against bacteria in concentrations of 1 to 3%. It is also a solvent in perfumes, a preservative in hair dyes, and a topical antiseptic. It is irritating and corrosive to the skin and mucous membranes. Ingestion of large doses causes intestinal upsets. It can cause skin irritation. Contraindications: In sensitive people if they are using Balsam Peru, which is commonly used in face masks, perfumes, cream hair rinses, and astringents. Products that Contain Benzyl Alcohol:
